Today - May 1st - is the International Workers' Day, also known as Labour Day or May Day. Today most of the world commemorates the "Haymarket affair", and take to the streets for workers' rights and universal peace and brotherhood.
That's the idea, anyway. Here in Denmark we go to the local parks and listen to boring politicians while eating hotdogs and getting shitfaced. Which, I suppose, is fine. Most people here are pretty content with workers' rights as they are. I'm not, of course, but I'm a filthy fringe leftie.
Anyway, if you have any comments on the tradition, want to talk about how your country celebrates, or wish to rant about how it's all filthy commie bullshit, this is the place to do it. I'm always down for a bit of a rant myself.
I heard in the media there were riots on this day recently,,, Is it true? We have something similar here called "labor day" but without the animosity and crap. On Australia Day, however, we have had race riots in the past because of the "patriotic" nature of our anglo saxon population, would be nice if people were more inclusive as a nation.
For me I dislike how much the day have just become an excuse for drinking large amounts of alcohol for many people.
in my opinion the day should be about open dialog between politicians and the worker groups that don't normally have their ears, so that the problems not usually discussed could be brought to the forefront of the discussion.
I love the tradition of the worker's day, I just think it's lost it's meaning here in Denmark and probably many other places.
